The Circuit Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo is a tight, twisty track and has mainly favoured twin cylinder bikes in the past, so it was no big surprise to see six of them in the top eight today. Topping the leaderboard after qualifying was Carlos Checa, with fellow Ducati riders Jakub Smrz and Shane Byrne in second and third places. Just ahead of Leon is Max Biaggi (Aprilia), with Ducatis filling sixth, seventh and eighth places.

Leon - 5th, 1:34.780

We’ve got some work to do to make me happy, but it’s just the usual stuff really, so nobody is getting worried at this stage. Really only Carlos (Checa) has been consistently faster than me today and the ones who finished ahead of me in qualifying did their times as one-offs, so I am not too concerned. Everything has been progressing well today and we didn’t have any major problems. This is a fairly unique track and there are quite a few slippery bits that you have to be aware about. The nature of it favours twins, as you can see by the standings today. But, I’m confident that that the fine tweaks we will make tomorrow will improve the bike and let me lap more quickly.

Sylvain - 11th, 1:35.189

This track is very different to other tracks in that it is fairly flat and there are lots of corners and no big straights. So for this track we changed the bike’s geometry quite a bit and improved the feel of the bike in the afternoon. Then, it felt more comfortable and I am sure that the work we will do tomorrow will be another improvement. I hope that’s the case, because I don’t want to be in a situation where we have to pull a rabbit out of the hat to find a good set-up. This series is so competitive, that just two tenths of second can lose you two rows of the grid, so I have to qualify as high up as possible to have any chance of a podium.

I Piloti del Team Suzuki Alstare Leon Haslam e Sylvain Guintoli hanno concluso la prima giornata di prove libere e qualifiche a Valencia in 5° e 11° posizione, ma sono fiduciosi di migliorare domani. Il Circuito della Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo è una stretta e tortuosa pista che ha sempre favorito le 2 cilindri nel passato, così non è stata una gran sorpresa vederne sei tra le prime otto posizioni. In cima alla classifica si è posizionato Carlos Checa, con i colleghi Ducati Jakub Smrz e Shane Byrne in seconda e terza posizione. Proprio davanti a Leon c'è Max Biaggi (Aprilia), e le altre Ducati in sesta, settima e ottava posizione.

Leon - 5, 1:34.780

Abbiamo del lavoro da fare per essere contenti, come al solito del resto, e non siamo preoccupati. Solo Carlos (Checa) è stato costantemente più veloce di me oggi, mentre gli altri che sono arrivati davanti a me in qualifica hanno fatto i loro tempi una tantum, quindi non sono troppo preoccupato. Tutto sta procedendo bene e non abbiamo avuto grossi problemi. Questa è una pista abbastanza unica e ci sono sempre molte scivolate, bisogna esserne consapevoli. La natura favorisce le bicilindriche, come si può vedere dalla classifica di oggi. Ma sono fiducioso che faremo migliorare la moto domani e girerò più veloce.

Sylvain - 11th, 1:35.189

Questa pista è molto diversa dagli altri tracciati, in quanto è piuttosto piatta e ci sono molte curve e non grandi rettilinei. Così, per questa pista abbiamo cambiato un po' la geometria della moto e ho migliorato nel pomeriggio. Poi mi sono sentito più a mio agio e sono sicuro che con il lavoro che faremo domani avremo un altro miglioramento. Spero sia così, perché non voglio essere in una situazione in cui dobbiamo tirare un coniglio fuori dal cappello per trovare un buon set-up. Questa serie è così competitiva, che con appena due decimi di secondo puoi perdere due file in griglia, quindi devo qualificarmi più in alto possibile per avere una possibilità di fare il podio.
