He and his Suzuki Alstare team mate Sylvain Guintoli then disputed the lead for most of the second race, but Leon’s dreams of a superb double were dashed right at the death by Spaniard Carlos Checa (Ducati). Nevertheless, Leon’s tremendous win in race one and runner-up spot in the second puts on the very top of the Superbike World Championship, nine points ahead of his nearest rival. Leon’s performances today, followed his Superpole victory yesterday showed that he and the Suzuki Alstare GSX-R1000 will be a potent combination this season.

Also very encouraging, from the team’s point of view, is Sylvain’s ability to run at the front and be in contention - especially in race two. The Frenchman led his team mate eight laps out of twenty-two and did not look out of place at all. This was his first race of the year, on a new (2010) bike, with a new team, but Sylvain has also showed that he too will be a force to be reckoned with this year. Although he missed out on the podium, he did receive a trophy - for the fastest lap of race two, so he did not leave Phillip Island empty handed.

Leon - Race 1: 1st, Race 2: 2nd
I am so happy to get my first WSBK win and it feels great! I want to thank the team and all the staff back at the workshop for all their support and hard work and I’d also like to thank Francis and Patricia Batta for having faith in me.
The first race was such hard work and it was impossible to relax for a second. I knew that I had Michel and Nori breathing down my neck, but I just kept concentrating on my lines and my braking points and tried to hold them off. I realised that Michel was in my wheeltracks going into the last turn and would try and use the draft to get past me, but I kept my head down and charged to the flag. At the end, I didn’t know if I’d won or not, but when I realised that I had, I was so unbelievably happy and it was such a fantastic feeling. All weekend I knew that a win was possible, but thinking about and it happening are two different things.
In race two, I had some problems with rear traction but I still thought I could win. I had a great fight with Sylvain and when I finally got ahead of him and made it stick, I thought he might act as a buffer between me and the rest. Then suddenly, Carlos was there. He dived under me just three corners from the end, on the last lap. I tried to get it back, but he managed to hold me off and take the flag. But, it feels good to take a win and a second in my first race with the team and it feels fantastic to be leading the Superbike World Championship.

Sylvain - Race 1: 6th, Race 2: 4th
I have really enjoyed today and it’s been great fun. I can’t remember the last time I was leading a world champion ship race, so to lead quite a lot of race two was a great feeling and now I want to do it again. When I was in front, I felt comfortable and I knew I could keep up a good pace. Everything felt very smooth and it was all going to plan until I made a small mistake and Leon and then Carlos went through. Carlos and I touched in turn 8 when my elbow was in contact with his front wheel and then I tried a bit too hard to get back straightaway when perhaps I should’ve been a bit more patient and that;s where I lost ground.
I could’ve made a better result in the first race if I hadn’t had such a bad start. My pace was good, but I was too far off the leaders, but I am learning about WSBK race pace and also the fact that the races are longer than what I have been used to. I am very happy with all the work we’ve done and am enjoying riding this bike so much.
It was nice to get a trophy (for the fastest lap in race two) and I hope that it will just be the start of many to come. I am looking forward to Portimao and my next trophy.

LEON IN CIMA AL MONDO!

Il pilota del team Suzuki Alstare Leon Haslam ha registrato la sua prima vittoria nella prima gara del Campionato del Mondo Superbike a Phillip Island. Ha condotto la gara dall'inizio alla fine e ha preso la bandiera con soli quattro millesimi di secondo davanti a Michel Fabrizio (Ducati). Leon è stato molto forte nei test precampionato e i risultati di oggi hanno dimostrato che le sue performance nei test sono state meritate.
Lui e il suo compagno di squadra del Team Suzuki Alstare Sylvain Guintoli sono stati i leader per la maggior parte della seconda gara, ma i sogni Leon di una superba doppietta sono state delusi dallo spagnolo Carlos Checa (Ducati). Tuttavia,la grande vittoria di Leon in gara uno e il secondo posto nella seconda lo mettono in cima del Campionato Mondiale Superbike, con nove punti di vantaggio dal suo rivale più vicino. La performance di Leon di oggi, dopo la sua vittoria in Superpole di ieri ha dimostrato che lui e la Suzuki GSX-R1000 sono la combinazione potente di questa stagione.

Anche molto incoraggiante, dal punto di vista della squadra, è la capacità di Sylvain di stare davanti e di essere in lizza - specialmente in gara due. Il francese ha condotto otto giri di ventidue anni e non è da spttovalutare. Questa era la sua prima gara dell'anno, sulla nuova moto 2010, con una nuova squadra, ma Sylvain ha dimostrato che anche lui sarà una forza da tenere in considerazione quest'anno. Anche se ha mancato il podio, ha ricevuto un trofeo per il giro più veloce della gara due, in modo di non andarsene da Phillip Island a mani vuote.

Leon - Gara 1: 1, Gara 2: 2
Sono così felice di aver ottenuto la mia prima vittoria in Superbike ed è fantastico! Voglio ringraziare la squadra e tutto lo staff per tutto il supporto e il duro lavoro e mi piacerebbe anche ringraziare Francesco e Patricia Batta per avere avuto fiducia in me.
La prima gara è stata dura ed è stato impossibile rilassarsi anche per un secondo. Sapevo che avevo Michel e Nori con il fiato sul collo, ma ho continuato a concentrarmi sulle lie linee e staccate e ho cercato di tenerli fuori. Ho capito che Michel era nella mia scia all'ultimo giro per cercare di passarmi, ma ho tenuto la testa bassa fino alla bandiera. Alla fine, non sapevo se avevo vinto o no, ma quando mi sono reso conto di si, ero così incredibilmente felice ed è stata una sensazione fantastica. Per tutto il weekend sapevo che la vittoria era possibile, ma pensare e realizzarla sono due cose diverse.
In gara due ho avuto alcuni problemi con la trazione posteriore, ma ho sempre pensato che avrei potuto vincere. Ho avuto una grande lotta con Sylvain e quando finalmente sono stato davanti a lui e ne ha fatto bastone, pensavo che potesse fungere da cuscinetto tra me e il resto. Poi, improvvisamente, Carlos era lì. Si è tuffato all'interno a tre curve dalla fine, all'ultimo giro. Ho cercato di recuperarlo, ma lui è riuscito a tenermi fuori e ha prendere la bandiera. Ma, ci si sente bene a prendere una vittoria e un secondo posto nella mia prima gara con la squadra ed è fantastico essere il leader del Campionato Mondiale Superbike.

Sylvain - Gara 1: 6, Gara 2: 4
Mi sono davvero divertito oggi ed è stato molto piacevole. Non riesco a ricordare l'ultima volta che ho condotto una gara di campionato del mondo, con la gara due ho preso un ottimo feeling e ora voglio farlo di nuovo. Quando ero davanti, mi sentivo tranquillo e ho capito che avrei potuto mantenere un buon ritmo. Tutto sembrava molto liscio e tutto stava andando secondo i piani finché non ho fatto un piccolo errore e Carlos e Leon mi hanno passato. Con Carlos ci siamo toccati all'8° giro, quando il mio gomito ha avuto un contatto con la sua ruota anteriore e quindi ho spinto un po' troppo duramente per tornare subito davanti, quando forse avrei dovuto avere un po' più di pazienza, ecco dove ho perso terreno.
Potevo fare un risultato migliore nella prima gara se non avessi avuto una brutta partenza. Il mio passo era buono, ma ero troppo lontano dal leader, e sto anche imparando il ritmo delle gare SBK ed il fatto che sono più lunghe di quelle che facevo. Sono molto felice di tutto il lavoro che abbiamo fatto e mi sto divertendo molto a guidare questa moto.
E 'stato bello prendere un trofeo (per il giro più veloce in gara due) e mi auguro che sarà solo l'inizio di molti a venire. Non vedo l'ora di essere a Portimao e del mio prossimo trofeo.
