The King of this year’s Superbike World Championship (so far), met royalty at Silverstone before yesterday. Team Suzuki Alstare rider Leon Haslam, who is leading this year’s WSBK series by twenty points, met HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, during a special presentation to launch the new Silverstone race circuit in front of many dignitaries, VIPs and Media.
Silverstone circuit has a completely new section and it was at this part of the track that a special area and grandstand was set up for the presentation. Before the official presentation Leon, and father Ron, mingled with Damon Hill (former F1 world champion and president of the British Racing Drivers’ Club), Sir Jackie Stewart (ex-F1 World Camp) and other former F1 drivers, David Coulthard, Derek Warwick, Johnny Herbert, Martin Brundel and Jackie Oliver, plus rally legend Paddy Hopkirk and current F1 driver Mark Weber.
HRH Prince Andrew is fourth in line to the throne and is the United Kingdom's Special Representative for International Trade and Investment. During the opening ceremony, he told the assembled VIPs and Media that the UK is a special place for research, development and engineering in motorsports and should be promoted as such worldwide.
After the official presentation, Leon and Ron put on a special display for the media, with Leon on a standard Suzuki GSX-R1000 roadbike and Ron on one his bikes from his racing school, at the same time as Prince Andrew went round the track in a two-seater F1 car driven by Damon Hill. This was then followed by numerous television and print media interviews, which all fortunately took place before the rain came down. All in all, it was a great day for Birish motorsport and a great day for Leon, father Ron and Team Suzuki Alstare.
